The word prophet in Hebrew means: to overflow. A prophet
was one who was filled with the Word of God, the message
poured out over his heart. A beautiful example is the prophet
Amos who said: The Lord hath spoken, who can but prophesy?
(Amos 3,8). Thus a prophet is God’s mouthpiece. He is the one
who brings God’s words to the people. Other designations in the
OT for the prophet are: Messenger of God or watchman or seer.
